He needed a moment. From the second he had caught sight of Skylar Wedgeworth across the lobby of the Sinclair Ranch, she’d had this hold over him, this way of pulling him toward her that made him feel a little unhinged. Part of him had known that it wasn’t a safe bet to touch her more and hope the desperate need would go away, but that hadn’t stopped him.

And now he was hiding like a coward, because he was pretty sure she could see everything he was feeling written across his face the moment he walked back out into the room. It was just that she was different, took his mind away from Becca, away from the career he hadn’t had, made him feel something that wasn’t pain or hurt, or frustration, made him want. He hadn’t allowed himself to want anything in a long time. Wanting led to losing and he didn’t ever again need the experience of Becca driving away.

But he wanted Skylar. In some way that took him very much off-guard and left him wondering what exactly to do next.

And if he was wondering what to do next, she was probably sitting out on the rug feeling very much alone, so he splashed some water on his face, dried it quickly with a towel and went out to meet her.

“How do you feel?” he asked, pausing by the refrigerator for two bottles of water. “Are you hungry?”

She smiled. “I could pretty much eat all the time,” she said. “Depends on what you’re offering.”

She was cute in a sexy way, if that made any sense to his sex-rattled brained. The kind of sexy that started out with pencils pinning messy buns in place and oversized glasses and big sweaters, and ended with wild, bed-breaking, life-changing sex.

“Chocolate?” he asked. He opened the fridge again. “Cookies, pretzels, ice cream? There’s also some cheese and meat in here and bread over on the table.”

He made a mental note to increase their waitstaff’s salary. The hidden staff who kept the rooms in top order were to be commended.

“Ice cream,” she said after a moment’s deliberation. “But like, let’s put the cookies and pretzels into it.”

He laughed and carried the supplies over to where she sat before the fire. Her skin caught the flame’s soft glow and the light of the moon gave the whole room an ephemeral feeling. Or maybe that was just Skylar.

“Pretzels and cookies in ice cream?” He settled them on a small wooden tray from the table and placed it between them. “I’ll have to take your word for it.”

She laughed. “When I was pregnant, I ate the weirdest things,” she said. “I went through a period where I had to put soy sauce on everything. I mean, donuts and cereal and popsicles. Soy sauce.”

Caleb must have made a face, because she laughed again.

“Have you tried it since?” he asked. “How is cereal with soy sauce?”

She gagged. “Positively disgusting. By my third trimester, I was down to eating only popsicles.
